THE BACKGROUND ON THE CHANGE OF NAME

Tanzania Consumer Advocacy and Research (TCAR) originate from the dissolution of Tanzania Consumer Advocacy Society (TCAS). Tanzania Consumer Advocacy Society (TCAS) was an independent, non-partisan, voluntary, private, Non-Governmental Organization and non-profit making consumer organization registered in July 2007 under the Companies Act of 2002, Chapter 212 of the law of Tanzania as a company limited by guarantee.

For about sixteen years from July.2007 to April.2023; TCAS was a legally constituted organization, worked towards complimenting government’s efforts on protecting and promoting consumers’ rights in Tanzania however it had to be dissolved due to changes on the law made through Non-Governmental Organization Act (Amendments) regulations 2019.

According to the Non-Governmental Organization Act (Amendments) regulations 2019 section 16(i) says ‘’any organization which by its function and objectives fall under the meaning on non-governmental and was registered under other written law shall be required to re-register under this Act’’.

But also according to the Non-Governmental Organization Act (Amendments) regulations 2019 section 18(i) (b) says that ‘’the NGO registration board may refuse to register any organization under this regulation if the name of such organization include the word trust or company or limited or society or cooperative or equivalent in any other language or any abbreviation’’.

Therefore, based on Non-Governmental Organization Act (Amendments) regulations 2019 section 16 (i) and section 18(i) (b), the management of TCAS agreed on the dissolution of Tanzania Consumer Advocacy Society Company Limited to the new name of Tanzania Consumer Advocacy and Research (TCAR), skipping the restricted words such as Society, Company and Limited.

In 17^th April.2023, the new Tanzania Consumer Advocacy and Research (TCAR) was registered under the Non-Governmental Organizations Act.2002 made on section 11(1) and 17(2) of the Act No. 24 of 2002.
